The form of the building responds to its location, set on a hill overlooking Edinburgh. Routes leading to and within the house are either opened up to take advantage of the available views back down over the city, or closed to allow privacy to the main rooms. The hallway acts as a link through the house, widening and constricting as relevant to lead through the house and give prominence to the main and public rooms. The family rooms are set on a lower level to maximise privacy for the residents. The mass of the house was broken down to appear as a grouping of smaller buildings was consistent with the appearance of the existing buildings in the grounds, which have been added to incrementally over time. The height of the new house was limited to one and a half storeys, allowing the upper storey accommodation to have views out over the stone walls without dominating the site. The existing flagstones were retained on the floor.&nbsp;The bathroom was extended, using what had been storage space, and separate toilet added to improve the usability and value of the property.
